Online services, including amazon.com (AWS, and S3),salesforce.com, advertisting.com, and petco.com, had some serious DNS troubles. This morning, our Dynect Platform monitoring system noticed a problem, a big one.

Neustar, the organization that operates the UltraDNS product, announced on Thursday that it has collaborated with recursive DNS provider OpenDNS on creating a system that will allow the updating of the domain name system in near real time, using Neustar’s databases to create what the announcement calls the DNS Real-time Directory.

Coming shortly after last week’s announcement that Google had introduced its own Public DNS system, the DNS Real-time Directory will provide a centralized, cloud-based system that Neustar says will enable its customers and participating providers to publish DNS modifications in real-time to participating ISPs and recursive service providers, with the ultimate goal of creating a better user experience across the Internet.
